Tras una serie de extraños acontecimientos a lo largo del planeta, se descubre que, por razones
desconocidas, el corazón del planeta Tierra ha detenido su movimiento giratorio, lo que causará en
pocos meses un tremendo desastre natural, eliminando la vida tal y como la conocemos. Para buscar
una solución a esta catástrofe el gobierno y el estamento militar piden ayuda al geofísico que
descubrió qué estaba pasando, el Dr. Josh Keyes (Aaron Eckhart), y a un grupo con los mejores
científicos mundiales. Deberán viajar al centro de la Tierra en un vehículo subterráneo al mando
del comandante Robert Iverson (Bruce Greenwood) y la mayor Rebecca “Beck” Childs (Hilary Swank).
Su peligrosa misión será la de detonar un dispositivo nuclear que intente reactivar el núcleo, y
así salvar al mundo entero de una destrucción segura.
